PC Praxis: FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050 tops in comparison test
The German computer magazine PC Praxis has published a major comparative test in its issue 8/2005: five Voice-over-IP PBX systems with integrated ADSL modems and four VoIP adapters without integrated modems were examined. The best products tested were found to be FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050 and FRITZ!Box Fon ata.
The authors were most pleased with the extensive features of FRITZ!Box Fon: "The current flagship of the AVM line, FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050, provides all the functions you need in connection with ADSL and telephony." The new FRITZ!Box Fon is an ADSL router and a landline and Internet PBX in one device.
PC Praxis: "The 7050 has outgoing connections to a broadband line and a PSTN or ISDN phone line. Locally, FRITZ!Box provides cabled LAN, WLAN, and VoIP. Its internal S0 bus, which allows you to use ISDN terminal equipment for VoIP, is unique among the products tested."
The AVM principle of making Internet telephony as convenient as possible made a persuasive impression. The testers wrote: "For all its rich features and high performance, AVM manages to keep the configuration as simple as possible." Moreover, the quality of voice transmission is beyond all doubt: "The voice quality on Voice-over-IP calls with the current firmware is outstanding, even during heavy upstream loads."
The PC Praxis test results: Operation "excellent"; VoIP "excellent"; voice quality "excellent". Overall a straight "excellent" for FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050, and first place in the hardware comparison test. The testers added: "If you want to use existing ISDN telephones as VoIP phones, there's no alternative to the new AVM FRITZ!Box WLAN 7050 (or the 5050 variant without WLAN)."
In a second test, PC Praxis compared four Voice-over-IP adapters without integrated ADSL modems. Here again, AVM took first place with FRITZ!Box Fon ata. PC Praxis: "With its complete set of cables and adapters, FRITZ!Box Fon ata is an economical entry into VoIP for those who already have a working ADSL line."
